The Sun, SPF and YOU

Everyone should be using sunscreen Every day.  As soon as you walk out of your house, even if you are going to be in a car, you begin receiving UV radiation that damages your skin, leading to aging.  Most of the aging changes of skin are due to your genetics and your sun exposure over time.  There is nothing you can do about your genetics, but you can do something about your sun exposure.  Start using sunscreen NOW.

Þ The sun causes 90% of all skin cancers.

Þ Sunburns before the age of 18 yr increases the lifetime risk on developing melanoma

Þ Overcast days are not safer than those that are sunny, as 70-80% of the sun’s ultraviolet rays can get through the clouds.

Þ The destructive effects of the sun are about 80% stronger when sunlight is reflected off  sand and snow.

Þ The sun’s rays increase in intensity about 4% for every 1,000-foot rise in altitude (Watch out, skiers!!)

Þ It’s better to play or engage in sports before 10 a.m. and after 4 p.m. If that’s not possible, try to avoid being out at high noon.

Þ Excessive sun exposure weakens the immune system, reducing your defense against infection.

Þ In general, kids can get all the Vitamin D they need for strong bones from fortified milk, salmon, vitamin supplements and/or brief, casual sun exposure

In Hawaii, where the residents apply sunscreen more regularly than in other states, melanoma rates are declining.  The same goes for Australia, where an estimated 74% of residents use sunscreen regularly.   UVA protection is especially important to protect against melanoma.

Protecting your skin from sun is the single most important thing you can do for your skin.  The  EltaMD Sunscreens on this web site are available only here and in my physician’s offices.
