Skin Care Myths

You only need sunscreen when you are ‘going out in the sun’

FALSE.  Any time you leave your home you should be wearing sunscreen.  UVA rays penetrate the glass windows on your car and your office window.  You should apply at least spf 30 every day on your face, neck, the back of your hands and any other exposed areas.

If you haven’t taken care of your skin since you were young, the only thing that can help you is a face lift, peels, and laser

FALSE.  It is never too late to set up a skin care regimen.    Even 80+ year old skin will respond to exfoliation, antiaging treatments such as neuropeptides, and moisturizing.

Exfoliation will hurt your skin because it removes skin cells

FALSE.  Exfoliating removes the ose good quality products from reliable manufacturers, termost layer of dead skin cells.  This stimulates the cells at the bottom of the skin layer to divide, and renew the upper skin layers.  Newer cells will give your skin a healthier, brighter appearance.

Beauty is only skin deep

A HUGE fallacy.  So much of how your skin looks is dues to what you put in your mouth!  First, water, water, water!  Your skin will not become hydrated if you do not drink plenty of fluids.  Moisturizers help keep the waer in, but do not provide water to your skin.

Second, many vitamins and supplements are excellent for your skin if taken orally.  Some vitamins ae good for your skin if applied, but it is also very important to have a good vitamin and supplement regimen, preferably supervised by your physician, to help your skinl.

Creams with vitamins and supplements are good for your skin

Some vitamins are great for skin.  For example, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin A, Niacin (Vitamin B3).   Evidence has accumulated about the benefits to skin of Coenzyme Q10, alpha-lipoic acid, and DMAE.  The evidence for other vitamins is not as strong, but research is continuing.   It is important to use products from quality manufacturers who use quality materials in their products.
